Book Summary & Description
Another amazing book from @tjklune, I laughed and cried sometimes at the same time!Every one of his books is breathtaking, either with heartaching beauty or irreverent humor that will have you laughing out loud at the most inappropriate times in the most inappropriate places. I know I can always get away and find peace in this crazy world reading one of TJ Klunes books. I always want to thank him profusely for sharing his talent with the world at the end of every one of his books. What an amazing story, one I read cover to cover without putting down! The main character, Nate, is a journalist who got caught in compromising position and lost his job while at the same time receiving the news that both his parents died. He heads to the cabin to discover its not empty, that hiding there is an injured man named Alex and a quite extraordinary young girl named Artemis Darth Vader.
Nates emotions run the gamut – fear, disbelief, shock, and awe – and having lost everything he begins on an journey to help right a wrong, trusting his gut and fighting the attraction he feels for Alex. It was a wild ride, full of shootings, car chases and crashes, mad scientists; it has everything you could want. But inside all of this is a story of love and loss, devotion and hope. This is one of TJs deeper books, with a beautiful, heartfelt story, engaging and charming characters (Artemis Darth Vader lives up to the promise of her name, and I would even say she exceeded expectations), and a positive message that is sorely needed in these troubled times. TJ is one of those authors who can make me literally laugh out loud and cry within a few pages of a book, and one of a select few whose books I enjoy reading again and again.
well, this is tj klune, and almost all the reviews are five star reviews, and i dont know what i can add. in short, this is an amazing and mind-expanding book, and to my surprise, i cried thru the last pages. I love the humor, the family they found and the love, bacon lots of bacon. To me this wasnt one of the best books I read by TJ KLUNE , it was one of the best books I read this year though. T. J Klune takes yet another sci-fi/fantasy genre and writes something entertaining and thought provoking while making you laugh when you dont expect to. It would be very difficult to write a review about this book without giving away too much of the plot, so I wont do that here. Instead I will say that this book reads like an action movie complete with explosions, bad guys, etc.

I’m struggling with how to rate and review this book, to be honest. While I appreciated TJ’s writing, I don’t know if I particularly. . . liked the book all that much. And it’s true, this book falls into the sci-fi genre, but it has the anxiety-producing intensity of a thriller. I don’t like feeling anxious, and I don’t like mysteries or suspense because of it, and this book gave me that same clenching somethingisgoingtohappenomg feeling that I, personally, don’t enjoy. The story relies heavily on momentum to move the plot forwards, and we really don’t get to learn too much about the individual characters.
The highlight of the story, for me, was the creative world-building and the intense, careful writing that TJ does so well in his more serious stories. The book is basically serious all the way through, so if you were expecting something light or with bits of humor, this book really doesn’t fit that bill. And though I got the gist of what was going to happen fairly quickly, the richness in TJ’s storytelling was really beautiful to read. I always, always enjoy his writing and his talent, even when I don’t mesh well with a story’s vibe. I missed the intense romantic chemistry that is so present in most of TJ’s books. The story is really more sci-fi with romantic elements than a focused romance, IMO, and that was just fine with me, but perhaps it’s something you should know going into it. I always take into consideration how quickly I read a story when I come up with my final review.
I am ashamed to say, I was a bit worried ,when I read the blurb. . . I mean it is a bit vague, andArtemis Darth Vader. . . what does that mean ??!!I know TJ doesn’t like spoilers and I do worship the altar he writes on. . . I also think this is a story you should jump into blind. . . It is much more enjoyable that way. I can honestly say, that I didn’t expect anything that happend in this story, but I sure loved every second of it. I was captivated the second I started reading, and I finished it in one go. . . I am still processing, while writing this review. . . I laughed and I cried (wookie-cry face) and I closed it with a big smile on my face. . . That is all you are getting from me. . . I am sorry ;)I advice everyone to go and “one click” this one, as soon as you can.
Seeing Nate’s view of Alex as a cold-blooded killer and Artemis as just some weird little girl do a complete 180, with him ending up adoring them both. Their time there was very special and the beginnings of what I was hoping to be the development of deep, on-page feelings between Nate and Alex. came, all hell broke loose, and the possibility of a the story becoming primarily a romance became over-shadowed by all of the gunfire and *thump-thump-thumping* of Blackhawk helicopters. So while the action was intense and I couldn’t put the book down, I felt as if TJ’s signature bone-deep feels and humor were at least partially MIA. My favorite part of the book was short and totally an info dump, but when Nate and Alex finally made a ‘connection’ and the full story behind Long story short, yes, I did enjoy the book quite a bit, but it didn’t feel quite as
My ARC copy of the book was provided by the author in exchange for a fair, unbiased review. When I was growing up, these stories helped me escape life and took me on journeys through endless possibilities. To this day, when I read a well written sci-fi novel, I am transported into the story and I relish every moment. In fact, TJ Klune could not have written a story more suited to my tastes if he had climbed inside my head before sitting down to write. Like so many of TJ Klune’s stories, The Bones Beneath My Skin is about family. After inheriting the family cabin in middle of nowhere Oregon, Nate decides to go there to figure out what comes next. A man named Alex and a strange little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. I loved having the story unfold through the eyes of Nathaniel Cartwright.
TJ Klune is a brilliant writer and this book is just ONE of the reasons why. It’s a story about Nate, Alex and a very special girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. The writing is phenomenal as always, the characters & setting are on point, and it’s a little less focused on the romance but that was okay just because the story just owned me from page one till the last word. So although the story is well written, I would’ve liked to have known that I was reading the wrong genre. The Bones Beneath My Skin had the potential to go awry at several points, but instead TJ Klune always kept the narrative steady: in its message, pacing, and obvious love of the characters. There’s some humor (it’s hard to imagine a TJ Klune book without some humor), some action, and two men hardened by grief working towards a greater goal.
The romance is quiet, and only a handful of moments, but it makes sense in a way that trying to make it bigger would have been a mistake that TJ Klune handily avoids. As for Artemis Darth Vader. . . a little girl who is far more than she seems, who is being hunted by those who would use or attempt to destroy her, she was a pleasure to read. Told in Nathaniel Cartwright’s single, third person POV, The Bones Beneath My Skin is science fiction with twists of action, a thread of romance, and a compelling plot. Advanced Review Galley copy of The Bones Beneath My Skin provided by the author in exchange of an honest review. Id describe this book as being Heavily Sci-fi with a tiny dash of Romance. Bear in mind that this isnt because of the virtually non-existent sexy times ; TJ Klunes strength lies in his story crafting abilities and not steam.
This was besides it being a story about an adventure of epic proportions undertaken by an extraordinary girl and the two men who went along with for the ride. I will never forget the girl that is Artemis Darth Vader and after you read this too, I promise you wouldnt too. I like so many others adore TJ – he is a master storyteller. . . I was excited to read this even though I had no idea what was coming. I really appreciated and enjoyed the writing even though it lacked TJs humor or romance it didnt lack love and I felt this was a strong message. Seriously this ones going on my best of 2018 list and I am going to review the hell out of it, in a day or two when I’ve got my thoughts together and I’m done hating TJ for the emotional wringer he just put me and my buddies through. Like reading a love song about 90’s sci-fiction action films.
Quote of the Day
I could recognise his soul in mine as much as he could find me in his. Our sole existences seemed to have been for this very moment when nothing else mattered.
You know you’re reading one of this man’s books, it’s brilliant, there’s light, there’s dark, there’s sorrow, and joyAnd all of these elements balance out to make a story you’re so invested in, you don’t realise you’ve just devoured 100,000+ words in very little time at all. If you’re an avid reader of Tj Klune you know you never put a Klune book down without learning a lesson and getting knocked over with feels. ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest reviewThis book is about an angsty mess named Nate, who goes to his cabin home for some R&R, only to find home invaders already living there, and it’s the 1990s, and he suffers Stockholm’s syndrome when the angsty mess home invaders befriend him. The things you learn through books!I think my #1 issue with this book is I went into it expecting a m/m love story and was in fact craving a romance in my very soul.
I’m still wholly devoted to everything TJ Klune writes, tho, and as always his dialogue is Quality!Character development is well done although the frequent use of flashbacks to fill in the histories does interfere with the flow of the story. As the story is told from the perspective of one of the three main characters there is a difference in how personal detail is presented even though the book is written in the third person. The end of the story provides the opportunity to fulfil a goal that is repeated a number of times throughout the book. ‘The Bones Beneath My Skin’ is sublime in that way that only TJ can write. It’s everything and nothing like what you’ll expect; Nate, Alex and Art are incredible characters thrown into a dangerous scenario and you’ll be taken on a journey like none you’ve taken before.
God I adore the way TJ integrates music in his books. An exceptional book, guaranteed to please (& maybe make you cry just a little). Klune book I know to expect greatness and this newest epic masterpiece did not disappoint. Nate has inherited his parents cabin in the middle of nowhere Oregon and finds Alex and Art holed up there, running from the world, basically. It’s a story of family ties and friendship and love and making your own life. You’re going to have to forgive me if this review turns out to be incoherent because sometimes there just aren’t words to describe how amazing a book is, but I’ll do my best!I want to start by saying that the only other book I’ve read by TJ Klune so far is The Lightning Struck Heart which is a hilarious, outrageous m/m fantasy romance that I adored.
Fear not, you know this is a spoiler-free review site, so I’m going to give you my reactions, without giving anything away because honestly, this book is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I want you all to read it without knowing what to expect! The plot is fantastic, I absolutely love the authors writing style and was instantly swept up into the story and into Nate’s head, seeing this story through his eyes was perfect!I love Nate, and Alex and Art, three completely individual characters who’s pain, suffering and love was so vivid that I felt connected to them, desperate for things to work out. Nate is sweet, kind and haunted by his past, Alex appears tough and strong but has a much deeper core, and Art. . . well, I’ll let you discover how amazing Art is by yourself.
The enemies-to-lovers style romance itself is such a fantastic, realistic portrayal of an m/m romance, focusing less on the sex and mostly on the chemistry, tension and bond between these two complex characters. To try and sum this up simply, I couldn’t get enough of this book, I read and read for hours, never wanting to put it down and whether you like romance, action, or adventure, I urge you to read this incredible story about oppression, standing up for what matters, appreciating the smaller things in life, and dreaming of an impossible future. It’s a story of laughter, love, caring, anger, pain, suffering, denial, belief, and a whole shed load of bacon. Trigger Warnings: There are some dark topics that are explored in this book including; suicide, mental illness, grief and homophobia. The Bones Beneath My Skin is such a lovely story that is filled with the unexpected and SO MUCH HEART.
And when I say “nice,” I mean both completely heart-wrenching as it pertains to one book in particular, and very interesting when it comes to others. Even when I didn’t know who the main character was as a person just yet, you can bet by page two I was already crying because an unexpected character shows up in the story. In the case of this book, Nate Cartwright was feeling a little burned out from his DC job and when he found out his dad passed away and left him two things, a truck and their family cabin in Oregon, he packed his bags and made the drive west. He wanted to go to the cabin as a place to rest and reflect in solitude as to what he wants to do with his life, and finding a man and a little girl in the cabin is literally the last thing he could ever have expected to happen. This book starts off a little slow as the story unfolds.
I wouldn’t really say I was shocked by the reveal, because it kind of reminds me of another book (which I won’t mention here because it would be a huge spoiler and I don’t think the author would appreciate me comparing his book to this one another book even though it is kind of similar in this one way lol). But, everything before and after is so fresh and exciting, that the book kept me on my toes trying to figure out what the end-game was. I think Nate’s relationship with his brother is so heart-breaking to me, but like many of TJ’s books, he’s more about found family than the one you’re born into and that’s evident here. The author has a way of writing the loveliest children characters, and even if you don’t really like children, I feel like you will always wind up loving the kids in his books.
And speaking of lovely people in this book, not only are Nate and Art totally precious characters who I want to wrap up in blankets, but Alex is the BEST. This book is an absolute page-turner that makes it very hard to put down, because you just HAVE to figure out what’s going to happen next. This book is intense, with some much needed moments of levity sprinkled in throughout. The journey there just might not be what you might normally expect in the genre, but it’s a classic TJ Klune book with angst and heart and so much love. Im not a huge fan of Klunes Bear Otter and the Kid stories, though I do plan to reread them because anyone who can give me the Tales from Verania series truly deserves a second chance. I was, as usual with Klune books, thankful for the tasteful-and realistic intimate scenes.
A quirky little girl with zero filters who loves westerns and is extraordinarily attached to Alex.
